UNESCO Manifesto 2000

The Boston Research Center has supported UN reform through a host of activities and documents that broaden the participation of people worldwide. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Manifesto 2000 for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence was launched in 1999 with a global signature campaign that continued throughout the year 2000. The BRC is proud to be one of many NGOs to lend support to this endeavor, along with 50 million people including 16 Nobel Laureates and 38 heads of state.

The Manifesto represents a commitment by each signatory to follow the six principles of peace culture in daily life, family life, work, and community:

  • Respect all life
  • Reject violence
  • Share with Others
  • Listen to Understand
  • Preserve the Planet
  • Rediscover Solidarity

These principles are closely allied with six common values adopted in the final declaration at the Millennium Summit:

  • Freedom
  • Equality
  • Solidarity
  • Tolerance
  • Respect for Nature
  • Shared Responsibility
